Five Mistakes to Avoid When Fighting Alcohol Craving

Alcohol can be a fearsome enemy for many people. Trying to fight it is admirable, but many people fail numerous times because they make many mistakes which lead to... another drink. To quit alcohol you don't need a consistent addiction treatment. If you have a strong willpower you will certainly prevail in the battle with this enemy.

However, the reason I'm writing this post is to warn you about the possible mistakes that you can make on the path on quitting alcohol, or even if you're on drug rehab.

Replacing alcohol with the wrong substitute. Many people give up alcohol successfully, but they usually replace it with other substances. Not necessarily drugs, but since they have given up alcohol, they can may consume the new replacement in excess, which can cause various other problems. To give an example here, many people that are fighting alcohol addiction, and don't follow any substance abuse treatment, will turn to ingesting a huge amount of sweets. Evidently the blood sugar levels will go up, and when this surge suddenly disappears, it will cause alcohol cravings once more. Therefore, if you are trying to quit alcohol without following a substance abuse treatment plan, try to replace it with herbal teas and fruit juices.

Drinking one glass, just to kill the urges. That is the most ridiculous excuse ever for people who fight alcohol. One drink usually takes you to another and so on, and finally you will end up once more under the table. Stay away from bars, remove any alcohol stash that you keep in the house, and even stay away from your usual group of "merry" friends. Although real friends are supportive, those friends that have the same alcohol problem will give you the wrong kind of support.

Quitting alcohol for the wrong reasons. Many people temporarily quit drinking because they need to be with a new partner, with family, or because they need to be focused on an important job. This is not entirely wrong. It proves that you are not entirely down and you can find the strength to get rid of this for good. But if you don't think this way, once the factor that's been stopping you from consuming alcohol is gone, you will jump once more in a sea of it, with almost unquenchable thirst. So, keep in mind that you need to quit alcohol for yourself first, and not for anyone else.

Anyway, if you find it hard to get rid of this enemy on your own, it's best to choose AA meetings and an addiction treatment plan.
